Bitcoin wallets with no KYC

A self-custody Bitcoin wallet needs no account and no KYC, because it is software that holds your own keys. Nobody can freeze it, and nobody asks who you are.

What separates wallets is what they leak. Bitcoin's ledger is public, so a wallet that queries a company server links your addresses to your IP address. The wallets below are compared on open-source code, Tor and own-node support, and Lightning. 15 are listed, ranked by Safety grade.

How to choose a Bitcoin wallet

  1. Open source first. Code that can be read can be checked. Closed wallets ask you to trust a claim.
  2. Check how it connects. Your own node or Tor keeps your IP address away from a third party.
  3. Match your device. Desktop wallets suit savings; phone wallets suit spending.
  4. Back up the seed on paper. The seed phrase is the wallet. Anyone who has it has the coins, and losing it loses them.
  5. Download from the official source. Fake wallet apps are a common theft. Verify the download against the project's own site.

Bitcoin wallets: questions

Best Monero wallets
All anonymous crypto wallets

What is the best anonymous Bitcoin wallet?

One that is open source, holds the keys on your device, needs no account, and connects over Tor or to your own node. Electrum currently has the highest Safety grade on this page.

Does a Bitcoin wallet require KYC?

A self-custody wallet does not. There is no account and nobody to verify you. KYC applies to exchanges and custodial services, not to software that holds your own keys.

Is a Bitcoin wallet anonymous?

The wallet does not know who you are, but Bitcoin’s ledger is public. Privacy depends on how you acquired the coins, whether you reuse addresses and how the wallet connects to the network.

Which Bitcoin wallets support Lightning?

Several do. They are marked "Accepts Lightning" in the table.
