Best Monero wallets

A Monero wallet holds the keys to your XMR on your own device. There is no account, no email and no identity check, and because Monero hides amounts and addresses on its ledger, the wallet is the only place your balance can be seen.

Wallets differ in three ways that matter: whether the code is open, which platforms they run on, and how they reach the network. A wallet that uses someone else's node tells that node your IP address. The best ones let you pick your own node or route over Tor. 7 are compared here, ranked by Safety grade.

How to choose a Monero wallet

  1. Open source first. Code that can be read can be checked. Closed wallets ask you to trust a claim.
  2. Check how it connects. Your own node or Tor keeps your IP address away from a third party.
  3. Match your device. Desktop wallets suit savings; phone wallets suit spending.
  4. Back up the seed on paper. The seed phrase is the wallet. Anyone who has it has the coins, and losing it loses them.
  5. Download from the official source. Fake wallet apps are a common theft. Verify the download against the project's own site.

Monero wallets: questions

What is the best Monero wallet?

There is no single best one. On this page Cake Wallet has the highest Safety grade (7.4 out of 10). Choose an open-source wallet for your platform that lets you connect to your own or a trusted node.

Is a Monero wallet anonymous?

A self-custody Monero wallet needs no account and no ID, and Monero hides the sender, receiver and amount on the ledger. What can still leak is your IP address, to the node your wallet connects to. Use your own node or connect over Tor.

Do I need to run a node to use a Monero wallet?

No. Most wallets can use a remote node so you can start in minutes. Running your own node is more private, because a remote node learns your IP address and when you transact.

Which Monero wallet works on a phone?

Several open-source wallets support Android, iOS or both. The platform is listed in each wallet’s description below.

How do I get Monero into a new wallet?

Copy a receiving address from the wallet, then buy peer to peer or swap another coin for Monero and have it paid to that address.
